Women in STEM: From Finances to Flying
Goldman Sachs alumna turned aviator, Beverley Drake, is the first female commercial and military pilot from Guyana. In 1977 she flew for the Guyana Defence Force and Guyana Airways Corporation. She came to the United States in 1980 and worked in the Goldman Sachs Operations Division from 1986 to 1991 until she decided to follow her passion and pursue a full time career in the aviation field. She obtained her master’s degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and currently works as a program manager in the Office of Government and Industry Affairs (GIA) at the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Her role in GIA is one of advocacy, legislative and program managing, which covers all modes of transportation including aviation, marine, pipeline, highway and hazardous materials. Before joining GIA in 2014, Beverley served as Senior Aviation Accident Investigator in the Office of Aviation Safety for seven years. CYYT – St. John’s International Airport Facts
The first commercial air service at St. John’s International Airport went into operation on May 1,1942 with the arrival of a Trans-Canada Air Lines Lockheed Lodestar aircraft.

In 1988, Emma Houlston, at nine years old, landed her family’s single-engine aircraft in St. John’s making her the youngest person to fly across Canada.
