Χαιρετισμούς από την Ελλάδα
(Greetings from Greece)
Dreams Soar founder and pilot, Shaesta Waiz, landed in Greece on June 26, after a 702-nautical mile, five hour, 13 minute journey. Upon arriving, she was able to connect with children at an orphanage in Athens called “The Smile of the Child,” a nonprofit volunteer organization that defends the rights of and fights vigorously to secure better conditions for children worldwide. Shaesta was able to privately engage with the children, though they were not the only ones who were inspired! After interacting with the group, Shaesta shared, “Being with these children today was a humbling experience. The hope and warm smiles on their faces gave me so much courage.” The group presented her with a painting which they had all collaborated to complete! Shaesta then mentioned, “We all are different but when we all come together, the outcome is simply beautiful!”

Following the orphanage visit, Shaesta went to Aviation Flight Academy where she spoke to 40 teenagers in the flight training program. She shared the Dreams Soar mission and gave them the opportunity to do a walk-around of our A36 Beechcraft bonanza!

Thank you to our wonderful host in Athens, Greece for making Dreams Soar!

Ciao Dalla Sardegna, Italia!
(Salutations From Sardinia, Italy!)
Dreams Soar is fortunate to have great supporters on board, especially along Shaesta’s global flight, who continually go out of their way to make each stop truly special! We recognize Marco Di Giugno, Airport Director at Cagliari Elmas Airport, on the Italian island of Sardinia, where Shaesta made a brief fuel stop, before departing for Greece.

Thank you Marco for your incredible support and your generous hospitality towards Shaesta during her stay!

Surprise from Fadi Noutchemo Simo, Women in Aviation International Chapter: Cameroon
Dreams Soar was thrilled to hear about an outreach event that took place last week in the Republic of Cameroon, a country in Central Africa. Jill Meyers, our Women in STEM/Outreach Coordinator, was contacted by her friend and Women in Aviation International (WAI) colleague, Fadimatou (Fadi) Noutchemo Simo, about an event she hosted in Cameroon to share the mission of Dreams Soar and Shaesta’s global flight. “Fadi and the amazing women of the WAI Cameroon chapter have made enormous impacts on the younger generation of girls in Africa. They attend the International WAI Conference each year and are always a highlight of the week for me and many others in the industry,” expressed Meyers. This event created a larger voice for Dreams Soar in Africa, sharing our mission, Shaesta’s compelling story and the global flight program.

Fadi is president of the WAI Cameroon Chapter, and is also the Founder and President of the Young African Aviation Professional Association (YAAPA). YAAPA is a group that promotes STEM education with a focus on aviation. They organized a special event for Dreams Soar where several presidents and secretary generals of university student associations in Douala, Cameroon listened to a presentation about our global program and mission. Fadi expressed, “The university students were really impressed! I am really proud of all the hard work Dreams Soar is doing.” Regarding the need to inspire young girls to pursue STEM, Fadi shared, “Indeed, inspiration is especially needed here in Africa where girls run away from science fields.”

Dreams Soar extends our sincere thanks to Fadi, WAI Cameroon Chapter, and YAAPA for their support of our global mission.

Creative Growth for Dream Team
Dreams Soar would like to welcome Cilia Salam to the Dream Team! Cilia came to the U.S. from Bangladesh at the age of 16 to fulfill her dream of becoming a pilot. She then decided to further her goals and enroll at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla. She plans to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Science in 2018. Cilia stated, “Dreams Soar is a family where we all possess unique skills and interesting backgrounds.” Cilia will be supporting the Dreams Soar media team in creating new and exciting content for our fans and followers.  She then said, “Everyone on our team is supportive of each other and we are all excited to inspire the next generation of STEM and aviation professionals.”

Welcome to the Dream Team, Cilia!

Influential Woman in Aerospace Propels to New Heights
Nicole Piasecki is the vice president and general manager of the Propulsion Systems Division at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Her father, the inventor of the twin-rotor helicopter, fueled her passion for the aviation industry. She oversees several projects in which teams are responsible for designing and developing an integrated propulsion system for all Boeing commercial airplanes. Not only do they work within Boeing, yet also with other engine companies while distributing approximately 750 airplanes annually. Nicole is a leader who works collaboratively with her teams and even advises to “surround yourself with people you trust and who have the strengths you lack.” Read more about her in GeekWire’s article.
Our Nation’s Capitol, Embracing Dreams Soar
Dreams Soar board chairwoman, Lyndse Costabile, had the opportunity to visit with women of STEM at Network For Good HQ in Washington, D.C. early last week. Network for Good (NFG), a software firm serving small to medium nonprofits, provides an integral, online multi-facet platform aligned with our fundraising needs. Our Dream Team enjoys the peer-to-peer personalized fundraising pages, allowing them to express themselves, share their inspiration and reasons they promote the next generation.

On June 26, an 8-week fundraising competition commenced across this young team in an effort to drive additional funds for future Dreams Soar programming, post global flight.

The NFG team members are also STEM enthusiasts and heavily support Dreams Soar in their own personal endeavors. This visit was an opportunity to advance our ability to make the user experience more powerful and meaningful for our current and future donors while also receiving insight on how this organization helps others worldwide!

Lyndse also had the opportunity to meet with Kim Stevens who is the Director of Communications and Operations of the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO). Together, NASAO and Dreams Soar will be perfecting and executing a strategy for the DCA stop along the global route!

Eyes on Egypt
Shaesta landed at Cairo International Airport on June 30! Keep your eyes peeled to social media this week for updates and stay tuned for next week’s newsletter for full coverage of the exciting outreach efforts in Cairo!
Daily Dose of STEM
Children are our future, therefore their education should be a priority. There is currently a skill gap in the U.S. due to primary education falling behind the fast paced, innovative world. This is alarming because not only does this create a low number of skilled workers, but leaving computer science out of education also causes students to fall short in other subjects such as English, math and science. To combat this issue, educators are now using a no-cost app called CodeSnaps. This app teaches coding basics by encouraging students to actively work hands-on in teams to control a robot named Sphero. Students are able to control the robot through code using an iPad. Read more about it in the link here!
